Why handmade orders drift — and which controls matter

Small handmade differences are natural. The sourcing question is whether the supplier has clear references and control points for the decisions that define the product.

Separate natural variation from drift

A handmade crochet product will not carry the mechanical uniformity of a moulded part. Small differences in stitch tension or shaping are part of the process. Drift is different: proportions, placement, construction or finishing move away from the approved product direction.

A useful production conversation therefore starts by identifying which details may vary naturally and which details define the product and need a control point.

Use an approved reference

The physical sample gives both sides a shared visual and construction reference. It should sit alongside recorded decisions for materials, colour, dimensions, attachments and packing rather than carrying the entire specification by itself.

For a repeat project, confirm whether any yarn, component, label or packaging decision has changed before treating the earlier reference as current.


Repeat components where the design allows it

Some crochet designs divide naturally into heads, limbs, petals, panels or other repeated parts. Organising those parts as defined jobs can make stitch count, size and finishing easier to review before assembly.

Not every product should be forced into this model. A blanket panel, shaped basket or one-piece accessory may need a different production plan. The construction decides the method.


Control assembly and finishing

Placement, proportion, stuffing, joins and finishing often determine whether two pieces read as the same product. Central assembly creates a clear point for those decisions and for fixed QC actions.

Pull or attachment checks can be included where they are relevant to the product. The precise checks still need to match the finished construction, intended use and destination-market requirements.

  • Where are placement, proportion and finishing reviewed?
  • Which fixed QC actions apply to this construction?
  • How does maker identification support follow-up if a problem is reported?
